What Makes Our Simulation Unique?
We use a carefully crafted generic industrial scenario that mirrors the exact challenges you face daily, but we by design do not use your live data. Why? Because stepping outside your specific situation creates powerful learning moments. You'll recognise every problem, but with the emotional distance needed to see solutions clearly.
This isn't theoretical training. It's hands-on problem-solving using a realistic multi-project value stream that could exist in any engineering or manufacturing organisation. Plant modifications, maintenance windows, competing priorities – it's all there.
Who Should Participate?
Built for professionals who juggle 50 + concurrent projects - particularly in industrial and manufacturing environments, yet equally valuable for any complex knowledge‑work setting. Perfect for:
- Project teams, department heads, or PMO leaders who suspect there’s a better way.
- Project & Process Managers who coordinate initiatives across multiple departments and locations.
- Technical Leaders facing intricate, interdependent engineering or production workflows.
- Anyone accountable for a portfolio of 50 + projects that follow defined processes who needs a clearer, faster way to deliver.
- Executives & Change Agents - it’s the perfect decision-making aid for anyone sponsoring or evaluating a change in project delivery approach.
The simulation offers a practical, shared starting point to explore flow‑based coordination across departments.

Experienced Teams & Kanban Practitioners
Already running Kanban for a while? Use the simulation as a sandbox for what‑if scenarios. Experience our rollback feature to compare different strategies. Tighten WIP limits, adjust prioritisation rules, change team behaviour or add capacity - then watch the results instantly. Ideal for high‑performing teams seeking their next breakthrough. You’ll sharpen your flow intuition and take home actionable improvement ideas.
For your use-case we suggest a private session as we can focus on your specific situation. Also fantastic for team-building and upskilling events.
What Will You Learn?
By the end of the Value Stream simulation, you and your team will have concrete insights into how to manage projects smarter. This isn’t a lecture – it’s an immersive experience where you discover solutions yourself. Key learning objectives include:
- Transparency & Bottleneck Detection: How to visualize work across your entire value stream and instantly spot where projects are getting stuck. No more hidden work or blind spots.
- Balanced Workload & Clear Priorities: Techniques to prevent team overload by limiting WIP (Work in Progress) and setting clear, shared priorities. You’ll see how focus leads to faster throughput.
- Cross-Team Collaboration: See how Kanban boards improve communication between departments, creating clearer cross-team collaboration on multi-project efforts. Silos break down when everyone can see the whole picture.
- Data‑Driven Decision Making: Practice using Kanban flow metrics (like cycle time, throughput, and aging Work in Process) to make informed decisions. Learn how metrics can predict delivery times and guide continuous improvement.
- Continuous Improvement Mindset: Develop the habit of “experimenting” with process changes in a safe environment. Not every idea will work – and that’s okay! You’ll learn from each experiment how even small tweaks can impact overall delivery.
Develop intuition for system behaviour under load and stress. Learn practical techniques you can implement immediately. Build confidence to lead change in your organisation.

Why Attend This Simulation?
Why invest 4 hours in this workshop? Because it delivers understanding and results you can’t get from a book or slideshow.
Here are a few reasons past participants recommend it:
- See It to Believe It: Kanban is often praised as a powerful solution for overloaded teams, but seeing is believing. This simulation lets you experience Kanban’s effects on multi-project work firsthand, without committing weeks or months to a pilot. It’s practical, hands-on learning - no dry theory.
- Realistic & Relevant: Unlike simplistic classroom exercises, our simulation is built around an authentic multi-project scenario with real-world levels of complexity. We don’t hide the messy parts - multiple teams, task dependencies, urgent requests, and unexpected delays are all part of the game. Thanks to state-of-the-art automation, the system runs just like a live project environment. You get realism and the ability to safely pause, observe, and adjust.
- Safe Space for Experimentation: The simulation is a risk-free lab for your ideas. Try a new prioritization method or impose a strict WIP limit and see what happens within minutes. What-if analysis is encouraged - it’s how you learn the nuances of flow. There’s zero risk, but plenty of “aha!” moments as you discover which changes improve throughput (and which don’t).
- Immediate, Standalone Value: Whether or not you pursue a full Kanban implementation afterward, you’ll leave with actionable insights. Many participants finish the session eager to apply Kanban practices in their own teams. It’s an eye-opener that often sparks meaningful change. Even if you decide Kanban isn’t for you (spoiler: you probably won’t), the techniques learned can still improve your project visibility and teamwork.
Michael Pölker - BASF Tamol tells us about their journey (May 2025, German with English Subtitles)
And it’s not just theory – industry case studies back it up. For instance, in BASF’s Tamol manufacturing cluster, visualising and managing work with Kanban led to measurable improvements and cultural change in how projects are delivered. Our simulation draws on scenarios like this (in fact, the fictional setup closely mirrors a plant modification process at BASF) to demonstrate real-world outcomes. You’re learning techniques that have revolutionized project coordination in leading organizations.
Getting to Know Multi-Project Kanban in 3 Steps

Choose Your Timeslot
As a rule, we run simulations every 2 weeks. Avoid disappointment and reserve a suitable timeslot right away.

Show Up and Have Fun
One day before the simulation, we'll check in with a few preparatory steps. Then there's nothing else to do but show up and play along!
The Journey You'll Experience
Starting Point:
You're not starting from scratch, but a few weeks into the year. You're entering a live system based on real Management of Change processes. 150 projects have been defined for the year. Some are in progress, most wait in the backlog, others are stuck. Your mission: create flow from this realistic chaos.

Phase 1: Hands-On Immersion
Dive deep into the day-to-day reality. Each simulated day, you will manually select tasks to work on and perform some actions, mirroring a real workday. Experience firsthand how work flows (or doesn't) through Asset Management, Engineering, Purchasing, and Assembly departments.

Phase 2: System-Level Coordination
Zoom out to a 30,000-foot view. We automate daily activities and focus on system coordination:
- Fast-forward to see how the system reacts over time with current settings
- Dive deep into Kanban metrics
- Run review sessions to reflect, learn, and adapt
Phase 3: Experimentation and Optimisation
Now the magic happens. Use our rollback feature to test what-if scenarios:
- Adjust WIP limits and see immediate impact
- Tweak team capacity or task variability
- Change prioritisation rules
- Compare different strategies side-by-side. Feel how the system reacts and build intuition for improvement
Connect simulation insights to your reality. Understand which improvements to implement first. Leave with practical next steps and confidence that transformation isn't just possible—it's inevitable when you know what to do.

Businessmap as a Platform
Participants run the simulation in a fully functional Businessmap (formerly Kanbanize) instance. Although the aim of the simulation is not to learn about Businessmap, one can still take home quite a bit about the tool.
The simulation is just the beginning
Based on what you learn, you might:
- Start with a Businessmap trial to visualise your actual projects
- Join our Kanban Bootcamp for guided implementation
- Run Review Sessions to assess your current situation
- Engage Bespoke Consulting for specific challenges
- Simply implement what you've learned independently
There's no pressure to continue with Xuviate. Many participants take what they learn and successfully implement on their own. We're here when you need deeper support.
