What is a Good Project to Kick-Start DX with?

As soon as the IT Leader in a mid-sized organization understands their critical role for kick-starting Digital Transformation (DX), the next question for many is: which project is a good starting point to get the ball rolling?

One of our IT Leader Mastermind groups recently tackled this question. Here is a summarised version of the outcomes.

The Mastermind Answer

IT Leaders are programmed to see every change in terms of a project.

Unfortunately, at the beginning DX is first and foremost about mind-set changes and culture and not so much about technology.

The first actual project only comes a few steps down the line, well after understanding the current Digital Readiness of the organisation and identifying some fellow “Digital Mavericks” that will join the journey.

When it is time to select the actual project, focus on sizeable quick-wins (implementation time less than 3 months start-to-finish) where success can easily be measured in business terms.

It is this last requirement that can be especially daunting for the usually technically-minded IT leader found in most mid-sized businesses.

Some More Insights

  • Xuviate have released a blog introducing a proven 7-step guide on How to Kick-Start DX without CEO Support. This is a good resource that deals exactly with this conundrum. It also contains numerous links to other resources that can help along the way.
  • Learn more about Agile Project Management for running the quick-win projects. A good resource to start is LinkedIn Learning.
  • Think big: Identify the official KPIs of the business that your possible projects would be touching as well as the potential magnitude. Only pursue projects above a threshold that guarantees them to be noticed by the business leaders if successful. Put a stake in the ground: e.g. only consider projects that will not need any additional budget over and above already committed resources and that have a potential upside of at least a 1 million increase in turnover over the next year.

Pro Tip

  • Identify a business leader who will be positively impacted and made to look good by the change and try to win them as project sponsor. This way your buy-in by business throughout the project will be much easier and the outcome more visible.
